The race to be the first ski resort open each year always comes down to Arapahoe Basin and Loveland. This year, Loveland opened it’s doors on Sunday, one day before A-Basin. It has been such a warm fall in Denver it seems too early for the ski resorts to be open. But while it’s been in the 60’s and 70’s in Denver, it’s been pretty cool in the mountain. In fact, the first Winter Storm Warning is today and the front range mountains are expecting to get a foot of snow, which will make skiers, boarders and the resorts happy. Being a Colorado native and an avid skier, I can’t wait to get up there for my first day of the season!
LoDo was named one of ten great neighborhoods in the U.S. The American Planning Association put together a list of the nation’s best neighborhoods that feature unique and authentic characteristics. This includes planning, architectural styles, accessibility and community involvement. Mayor Hickenlooper said in a statement “The national recognition of Denver’s LoDo district as one of our country’s great places is a welcome reward to the many civic and business leaders in our community whose vision, determination and collaboration over the past 30 years have preserved and revitalized this historic neighborhood.” It’s great when Denver gets recognized on a national scale as one of the best places to live. I couldn’t agree more!
McLaughlin’s is having a pumpkin carving contest this Sunday October 24th at 7:00. Unfortunately, it’s too late to sign up as a contestant, but you can still go enjoy their happy hour and vote for your favorite pumpkin. There will be some interesting carvings and if the contestants dress in costume, they get bonus points. Go support the local Riverfront Park bar for an entertaining night. The new Light Rail Station is starting to look like an actual station! The canopy supports are now in place and the handicapped ramps have been poured. It will be next summer before the new station is ready for use. Construction is moving along quickly with approximately 75% of the bus box walls now in place. Before the light rail can be moved a “lid” will need to be put on the bus box in order for the 16th Street Free Mall Shuttle to pick up and drop off passengers at the new location.
Riverfront Park is having the first ever Neighborhood Block Party on Saturday, October 9th (tomorrow!!!). Bassett Street in front of Glass House will be shut down between 17th and 18th from 3-6pm. The entire neighborhood will be invited to come listen to Chris Thompson and the Coral Creek Band, mingle with your incredible neighbors and eat from four of Denver’s best food trucks. There will also be a raffle for some great prizes including gift certificates to Esquire Fabricare, Riverfront Athletic Club, Zengo, Ink!, a case of wine and an original painting of your favorite four legged friend. The proceeds of the raffle will go toward the Railyard Dog Park. This great event is sponsored by the Riverfront Park Community Foundation and was organized by Siri Sellers, Jenn Russell and me! I hope to see all of you there!
