The inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge is ending this Sunday, August 28th, 2011 right here in Denver. The finish line will be in Denver’s Civic Center Park with a free party awaiting the riders. This 500 mile, seven day race was set along an incredible route of Colorado’s most scenic views. Starting in Colorado Springs, the athletes rode through Salida, Crested Butte, Gunnison, Aspen, Vail, Avon, Steamboat Springs, Breckenridge, Golden and finally Denver. This is sure to be one of the most anticipated international competitions. Sixteen international teams and 128 riders came for the inaugural year. The steep mountain climbs at 12,000 feet makes this one of the hardest competitions in the world. The riders are expected to cross the finish line around 1:30 on Sunday. The free festivities include concerts and bike demos, the event goes from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.
Each year the Inc. 500 tracks the 500 fastest growing private companies in the nation. This year, 13 of those companies were in Denver! The list is based on a three year revenue growth rate. The two companies that stood out to me are OtterBox (#70) and Smash Burger (#99). OtterBox is a manufacturer of portable electronic cases. I have a really cool case for my iPhone that is stylish and water resistant. Smash Burger is my new favorite burger joint and there are now over 100 locations. The company that topped the list was a New York based retailer Ideeli. Their revenue increased 40,882 percent in three years to $77.7 million. Colorado’s economy continues to be stronger than most of the nation and companies like this are a part of the reason why. To read the article, click here.
This morning I attended the opening ceremony for the new light rail station at Union Station. It was great to see community leaders, Denver residents and business people gather to celebrate this great accomplishment. The project took about 18 months to complete and it came in on budget! The new station and 16th Street Free Mall ride being right at the base of the Millennium Bridge is so great Denver and all of the Riverfront Park residents. Additionally, the 18th Street Pedestrian Bridge also known as the Union Gateway Bridge is now linked to the light rail platform. The traffic on that bridge will significantly increase now that the Light Rail station is complete. This is a great accomplishment for the city and the first step to making the Union Station redevelopment a reality. If you’re downtown, I suggest going and checking it out, it’s amazing how much has changed in only 18 months!
Last Saturday, August 6th, was an end of summer BBQ and T-Ball Tournament for the residents of Sun Valley at Rude Park. The event was sponsored by the Riverfront Park Community Foundation with a donation of $2,000 and another $1,000 in personal funds donated by Mark Smith, the president of the Foundation. The Riverfront Park Community Foundation each year determines where the money raised by the transfer of properties within Riverfront Park is donated. This year, the Sun Valley Experience was awarded some of the money. The program helped enroll approximately 180 needy kids in summer sports programs like t-ball and swimming. Sun Valley is a Denver West neighborhood that is located between 1-25, Federal, 6th Ave and 20th Ave. Fresh Start, an organization whose mission is focused on family and community centered activities for Denver residents, sponsored the event. The BBQ was a huge success with a couple hundred people attending. The Colorado Rockies even donated 500 tickets for the families to enjoy a game!
