Union Station Construction Update 09/24/11

The digging  on the second half of the bus tunnel is underway.  The excavation work will go through the end of this month and you can see the pile of dirt getting bigger by the day.  Once the excavating is finished, the concrete work will begin on the substructures and walls.  In another few months the second half will be connected to the first half of the tunnel already completed.

Gala on the Bridge

Thursday night the Greenway Foundation honored Mark Smith with the 2011 Friend of the River Award at the first annual Gala on the Bridge.  The Greenway Foundation has been an advocate for the South Platte River since 1974.  Over the years, the Foundation has been involved in the creation of over $100 million of environmental and recreational improvements along our urban waterways.  Last night the incredible gala was located on the 19th Street Bridge over the Platte River.  About 400 people, including Governor Hickenlooper and Mayor Hancock, gathered last night to celebrate Mark Smith’s contribution to the Central Platte Valley.  There was a beautiful tent set up over the bridge and a great live band to help get the night started.  A delicious dinner provided by Three Tomatos included a Colorado Trout appetizer, Game Hen on a bed of mixed vegetables and apple tarts for dessert. Mark’s passion for the Central Platte Valley stems from his love for the place he was born.  This was a wonderful tribute for his vision of transforming old railroads and warehouses into a beautiful thriving neighborhood.

Eagle Line Grant

The Federal Transit Administration gave RTD a $1 billion full funding grant agreement for the Eagle Project.  This is the highly anticipated train from Downtown Denver to Denver International Airport.  This is great news for Denver as the line was lacking funding to make the 2016 completion date.  This grant will also be for the Gold Line Train that goes to Wheat Ridge and Arvada.  To read the article in the Denver Post, click here.

A Taste of Colorado

Labor Day is here and that means an end to summer.  The Taste of Colorado is in it’s 27th year and its better than ever.  This year 60 restaurants are bringing their best food to Civic Center Park for this annual event.  Along with incredible food, there will be about 30 bands playing on the four different stages over the course of the weekend.  Some of the highlights are Asia, The Neville Brothers, Boys II Men, and country artist David Nail.  The event is free to the public and you can purchase tickets for food and activities.  It’s going to be a beautiful weekend; I hope you are able to make it out for some Colorado fun!  For more information, click here.
