One Union Station has its lead tenant and will start construction on August 1st! Antero Resources, a Denver based energy company, will occupy 70,000 of the 110,000 square feet of office space. They will have the third, fourth and fifth floors of this new building sitting just to the south of the Historic Union Station at 16th and Wynkoop. One Union Station will be a LEED Gold building and is a joint venture with East West Partners and Starwood Capital Group. Paul Rady, chairman and chief executive, said Antero Resources has “Been committed to Lower Downtown Denver for over a decade. One Union Station will provide our employees with a state of the art building in a location that they will love.”
On Tuesday, RTD announced that the 12.1 mile West Rail Line will open in April 2013. This is eight months earlier than the original prediction of December 2013. Everything has moved along smoothly between RTD, local governments and the contractors that they are way ahead of schedule. This line goes from Union Station through Lakewood and ends in Golden. It will connect downtown Denver to the Jefferson County Government Center. The West Rail Line is expected to have approximately 19,000 daily riders. This is another great step towards Denver’s improved public transportation system.
On Friday, May 18th, the Denver Union Station Project Authority (DUSPA) and RTD will hold a Grand Opening Celebration for the Light Rail Plaza. The festivities will start at 11:30 and will go through 1:00. There will be a concert with Electric Hammer at 11:30, a Zumba demonstration at 12:15, a short program at 12:30 and a performance with Roz Brown at 12:40. The public is encouraged to bring lunch and enjoy the entertainment. For more information, click here.
In the week since the Light Rail was taken out of Union Station, they have already removed the tracks! The progress was so fast. It will be great to have a safer way for pedestrians to get from the base of the Millennium bridge over to Union Station. The other big improvement of the week was the vents into the bus station. The three vents are now in place and look really cool. One is an exhaust vent, the second is an air intake vent and the third will be an emergency exhaust vent in case of fire in the terminal.
RTD will place a mockup of the new rail car in front of Union Station beginning on Monday, May 23rd through June 18th. There will be several meetings with interest groups for the first week and then it will be open to the public from May 31st-June 18th. Tours will be available Monday-Friday from 10-6 or on Saturdays from 10-4. This is an example of the rail cars that will go to DIA on the East line and to Arvada on the Gold line. It will be 1/3 the size of the normal cars but everything else will be the same. RTD is looking for feedback from the public on a few different things like types of handrails, seating configuration and accessibility for bicycles and wheelchairs. The anxiously awaited East line to DIA is expected to start operations in January of 2016!
